FSU baseball: Noles defeat Miami Hurricanes to win important series
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (32-18, 15-12 ACC) topped the Miami Hurricanes 6-4 to win a pivotal ACC conference series to keep their chances of hosting a regional alive.
The Noles scored first for the third time in the series when Jaime Ferrer launched a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
However, Miami got on the board in the second inning on an RBI double and scored two more runs on bases-loaded walk and sacrifice fly in the top of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
The Noles answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth behind back-to-back singles and a walk to load the bases with one out.
Jordan Carrion legged out a hard hit ball to avoid a double play for an RBI, and Colten Vincent and Jaime Ferrer had RBI singles to make it 5-3. FSU scored another run in the bottom of the seventh when Jordan Carrion singled and stole second, advancing to third base on a bad throw.
Alex Toral struck out, but Logan Lacey laced a triple off the rightfield wall to score Carrion for a 6-3 lead. Miami hit a solo home run to lead off the top of the eighth to trim the lead to 6-4.
FSU starting pitcher Carson Montgomery only lasted 1.2 innings, with Jonah Scolaro coming in with the bases loaded to get a huge strikeout to end the second inning.
Scolaro went 1.1 innings, allowing two earned runs, two hits, two walks, and three strikeouts. The story of the game was Ross Dunn coming out of the bullpen and going five innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, one walk, and six strikeouts.
Davis Hare came on in the top of the ninth inning, striking out the side to get the save. What a huge win for the Noles after getting dominated in the first game of the series. They will travel to Gaineville to take on the Florida Gators Tuesday night for a chance to win the season series.
