FSU softball: Jahni Kerr home run walks off the Gators for season sweep
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU softball (46-5, 16-5 ACC) defeated the Florida Gators 2-1 Wednesday night to complete the season sweep behind a Jahni Kerr walk-off home run.
The game saw the Noles overcome an early 1-0 deficit after the Gators scored in the top of the second on an RBI groundout. However, Sydney Sherrill continues to torch the Gators, getting her 200th career RBI in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game 1-1. That hit moves her into third all-time on the RBI list at FSU.
Kathryn Sandercock improved to 25-1, throwing a complete game, allowing two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts. One key to the win was Sandercock getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second with the one run allowed.
The Noles had other opportunities to breakthrough, wasting a leadoff double by Mack Leonard in the bottom of the second. Leonard led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single, and Amaya Ross stole second and third base after Devyn Flaherty fouled out.
However, Michaela Edenfield struck out, and Jahni Kerr grounded out to end the inning. However, Kerr made up for that with her walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Noles the win and series sweep of the Gators.
That was great to see from Kerr who has struggled at the plate at times this season.
It was a 2-0 hitter’s count, and Kerr drove a ball down the middle over the fence in right centerfield. She’s a player the Noles will need to produce as they move towards postseason play.
The win improves the Noles to 30-0 in their non-conference schedule, and they’ll wrap up the regular season with a three-game conference series on the road against NC State this weekend.
We’ll have that series preview for you Friday morning!
