FSU baseball: Takeaways from blowout win over UCF
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (14-6, 4-2 ACC) earned a 10-2 blowout win over UCF in midweek action Tuesday night. It was a big performance from Carson Montgomery, who picked up his third consecutive win.
It was also his first time pitching seven complete innings, and he’s gone at least five innings in his last three starts.
He had never gone five innings before that streak. He finished the game allowing two earned runs, two walks, and eight strikeouts on 84 pitches.
Pitch efficiency has been a point of emphasis, so it’s great to see this performance and progression.
The FSU offense churned out 12 hits, with Reese Albert, James Tibbs, Alex Toral, and Jordan Carrion having multi-hits games. Toral had a two-run home run, with Albert and Carrion notching two RBIs.
Key Takeaways
- Carson Montgomerys’ confidence
- Batters put the ball in play
- Defense was solid
It was a complete game in all three phases. Aside from a couple of walks, Carson Montgomery was lights out, and this is the progression we hoped to see as the year went on. He’s positioning himself to become a weekend starter with how he’s pitching in the last few outings. He did a solid job of working ahead in the count, and when some adversity struck, he didn’t allow it to phase him, which is something he’s struggled with in the past.
Aside from Logan Lacey striking out four of five at-bats and leaving seven runners on base, the FSU offense was potent. Seven different batters got hits, and they had five walks. Reese Albert and Lacey combined for seven of the team’s 13 strikeouts.
Defensively, the Noles were solid and they made a couple of webgems in the game. The lone error came in the top of ninth inning from a freshman when the game was well in hand.
Overall
That’s the type of performance we want to see in a mid-week game. Wednesday’s game against UCF has been canceled. The Noles will return to action Friday night against Duke for a three-game series.
