FSU baseball: Jaime Ferrer walk-off HR wins series against NC State
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (13-6, 4-2 ACC) needed 17 innings to defeat the NC State Wolfpack 6-5 and win the series after losing game one of Sunday’s doubleheader.
The Wolfpack had won game one of the doubleheader 15-4. Ross Dunn took the mound for the Noles and gave them another quality start. Dunn pitched six innings, allowing two hits, two walks, two unearned runs, and striking out nine.
However, he received a no-decision since NC State tied the game 3-3 with a home run off Jonah Scolaro. NC State reclaimed the lead with a two-run home run in the top of the 12th inning.
However, Alex Toral finally connected and launched a two-run home run of his own to tie the game after striking out four times before that at-bat.
Both teams were held scoreless until Jaime Ferrer’s walk-off home run in the bottom of the 17th inning.
The game should not have gone to extra-innings. The Noles wasted several opportunities to win the game.
They had the lead-off runner on second base on two separate occasions with no outs and failed to get the runner home. They struck out five of those six outs, with Mike Martin Jr. electing not to bunt the runner over both times. They struck out 28 times in the game, which is awful, and left 18 runners on base. Pitchers Davis Hare and Wyatt Crowell deserve major credit, who combined for 8.2 innings pitched.
They allowed five hits, four walks, and had 12 strikeouts with no runs allowed. The FSU defense committed five errors. Truthfully, it’s a game FSU is lucky to have won.
NC State threatened several times but did themselves no favors, including getting caught stealing at third base for the third out in the top of the 17th inning.
This baseball team has a lot of improving to do if they want to play in Omaha, but this was a much-needed win after playing poorly in the first game of the doubleheader.
A series win is a series win. FSU baseball will be back in action Tuesday (7 p.m. ET) and Wednesday (4 p.m. ET) against UCF.
