FSU Football: Top 5 players set to improve during 2022 Spring Practice
By Cole Maines
Akeem Dent
Akeem Dent was another player who came on in the late-season run by FSU football.
His position had quite a bit of ambiguity on the field but seems to have been solved as the season progressed. As he moved back to safety, he started to play better.
The Miami game seemed to be the game where he gained his confidence. It culminated in a great game at Boston College, where he got his first interception in garnet and gold.
He and Jammie Robinson may be the top two in that room. It is rather deep though, even across the defensive backfield. Sydney Williams is a young contributor and was the starter until an injury cost him time.
Jarques Mclellion, the Arkansas transfer, also developed late on and was rewarded with a bigger role. Renardo Green is a name that also may come back into the fold as he has been limited due to injuries.
There is a scenario where we can see three of these options play together, with someone dropping down to the nickel position.
Omarion Cooper emerged as a contributor and could push Jarrian Jones for a starting job. New editions like Greedy Vance and Kevin Knowles could battle Jarvis Brownlee for the other spot, and the loser may move into nickel as well.
Is Travis Jay a factor at all?
How do the young additions in Azareye’h Thomas and Sam McCall come into play as they look to impress early on?
There could still be new additions to the defensive back room that can complicate the projected starting lineup. It’ll be important for them to battle it out and find the best options as they will likely need to cover better with the defensive line talent leaving and the remaining question marks at linebacker. It is a team sport, and especially on defense, the puzzle pieces will have to fit together intricately to get the best product.
It could be slightly simplified if Akeem Dent continues developing and helping lead the room.
