FSU basketball rolls past North Florida for fifth consecutive win
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU basketball (12-5, 5-2 ACC) rolled past an outmatched North Florida (4-15) squad 86-73 for their fifth consecutive win Thursday afternoon.
The Noles had a quick turnaround after the overtime win against Duke Tuesday night. I wrote in the preview to expect the Noles to come out flat. That wasn’t necessarily the case, but it was more about North Florida shooting well above their three-point average to keep the game close. The Osprey’s connected on 53.8 percent of their three-point attempts in the first half.
However, that was still only good enough for a 48-38 deficit, with FSU basketball shooting well over 50 percent from the floor.
They finished 14 of 24 (58 percent) from three-point land after coming into the game only making 32 percent of their three-point attempts. They were also excellent from the free-throw line making 15 of 19.
Other than some careless turnovers, silly fouls on three-point attempts, and North Florida shooting the three-ball well, it wasn’t a terrible performance from the young team under the circumstances.
Leonard Hamilton knew they’ll have another quick turnaround traveling to Miami Saturday afternoon and likely tried to save some players from exerting too much energy.
I think that’s why we saw some odd rotations in the game. Nevertheless, the Noles shot 55 percent overall and was 17 of 26 (65 percent) from the free-throw line. Caleb Mills had 21 points on 8 of 12 shooting, and freshman Matthew Cleveland had a strong performance with 21 points and 10 rebounds.
Tanor Ngom had a solid game with 13 points and three rebounds. FSU played without Malik Osborne as this was a game he could rest and hopefully prepare to play against Miami Saturday. I wouldn’t take too much away from this game and it likely hurt FSU more to make it up than to not play it.
They could have used the rest instead of playing a potent Miami on the third game in five games. The Noles will play the Hurricanes Saturday at 2 p.m. with the game airing on ESPN.
