FSU football: Importance and impact of 2022 spring practice
By Kelvin Hunt
Transfers
FSU football has nine transfer players enrolled this spring and I expect them to add another 3-4 possibly between now and the end of spring.
However, those additions likely won’t be able to start until the summer. The benefits of enrolling this spring can’t be understated. We saw almost every transfer that went through spring practice last year contributed tremendously.
Jermaine Johnson, Keir Thomas, Jammie Robinson, McKenzie Milton, and Jarques McClellion all saw significant snaps. The only player that enrolled in the spring that didn’t, was running back D.J. Williams.
The only player that didn’t enroll in the spring to contribute in a major way was offensive lineman Dillan Gibbons. Going through spring practice allows them to learn their respective roles on the team and build rapport with teammates and coaches.
There is no having to figure out during the season moments because they’ll have time to get tons of reps in spring practice, summer workouts, and fall camp.
Those things will increase their probability of contributing significantly during the season, and that’s why FSU coaches brought them to Tallahassee.
Final Thoughts
The 21 players enrolling this spring provide two crazy points of view. On one hand, nine transfers tell you there’s still a major transition in talent infusion and building depth. The other part is the coaching staff understanding the benefits of freshmen enrolling early. It’s something you see at most major programs that compete at a high level and something we should continue to see at FSU.
