Little Production, So What?

Some of the criticism I’ve heard surrounding these three wide receivers is their lack of production at their previous stops. There could be a variety of reasons why that’s the case. We know with Spann, he transitioned from the quarterback position. Pittman dealt with an injury, and Oregon had poor QB play.

His freshman season at Oregon was his best when former first-round draft pick Justin Herbert was the Oregon QB. Pittman had 18 receptions for 227 yards and two touchdowns in only seven games that year.

That’s more than Malik McClain had in 12 games this past year. Johnny Wilson had 12 receptions and 154 yards with two touchdowns in five games last season, missing most of that time with a hamstring injury.

The production looks like it’ll be there, provided Pittman and Wilson stay healthy. If you’re worried about production? Check this out:

  • Tamorrion Terry: Redshirted in 2017 and brought zero receptions into the 2018 season. He finished that year with 35 receptions for 744 yards and eight touchdowns.
  • Kelvin Benjamin: Redshirted in 2011 and brought zero receptions into the 2012 season. He finished that year with 30 receptions for 395 yards and four touchdowns.
  • Kenny Shaw: Had three receptions for 36 yards as a freshman in 2011. Shaw had 34 receptions for 418 yards and four touchdowns in 2012.
  • Jesus Wilson: Had three receptions for 23 yards as a freshman in 2013. Wilson had 42 receptions for 527 yards and four touchdowns in 2014.
  • Kermit Whitfield: Had 11 receptions for 145 yards as a sophomore in 2014. Whitfield had 57 receptions for 798 yards and six touchdowns in 2015.
  • Nyqwan Murray: Had six receptions for 65 yards as a freshman in 2015. He had 27 receptions for 441 yards and five touchdowns in 2016.
  • DJ Matthews: Had six receptions for 72 yards and one touchdown in 2017 as a freshman. He had 42 receptions for 382 yards and one touchdown in 2018.

This is why I keep telling people having college experience is a big deal. Some guys went into seasons with ZERO production and had productive years the next year. Others had little production and produced some great numbers the next year.

So, it doesn’t worry me that these guys don’t have tremendous production. It’s not like those guys are going to come to FSU anyway right now. I could have given more examples that having little production doesn’t mean that next year won’t become much more productive. Some people are just looking for things to complain about.
