It’s a new age in college football ladies and gentlemen. No. 1 overall player and longtime FSU football commit Travis Hunter Jr. will sign with Jackson State University.

He announced the news Wednesday afternoon at his high school ceremony and posted on his Twitter account.

Travis Hunter committed to FSU football on March 3, 2020. He endured an FSU team that finished 3-6 and another team that finished 5-7.

Hunter Jr. never wavered on his commitment and routinely shut down rumors of him flipping to his home state school, Georgia. However, it was the allure of being a change agent and becoming the first No. 1 overall player in the modern era to attend an HBCU:

He’ll team up with former FSU football great Deion Sanders, who he considers an idol. It’s a crushing move to an FSU program that had tied itself to Hunter Jr. as a ray of hope towards the future. After all, there are several players considering FSU because of Hunter’s profile.

It’s a crushing move to an FSU program that had tied itself to Hunter Jr. as a ray of hope towards the future. After all, there were several players considering FSU because of Hunter’s profile.

One of those players was five-star defensive back Sam McCall, who was the first player to submit his national letter of intent Wednesday morning. The flip moved FSU’s national class ranking from No. 12 to No. 19, with 15 total commitments.

It’ll be interesting to see the effect of this move on the rest of the players that have yet to submit their national letters of intent. I’m sure the FSU coachings staff feels like they have to throw their hands up in the air with how all of this went down.

That’s nearly two years of work to secure an elite player only to see it dissolve in a matter of hours. Stay tuned to Chopchat for more reactions.
