Thoughts on Jashaun Corbin leaving FSU for 2022 NFL Draft
By Kelvin Hunt
Just behind the announcement of Amari Gainer staying for the 2022 season, running back Jashaun Corbin announced he’ll be leaving FSU to enter the 2022 NFL Draft.
It’s a move that doesn’t come as a surprise, although some folks thought he would return in 2022. Corbin has dealt with injuries every year while in college, including a hamstring injury in 2019 that he was still recovering from in 2020.
Corbin finally looked as though he regained the burst he had as a freshman that signed with Texas A&M coming out of high school.
Despite not having a great quarterback or offensive line, Corbin averaged 5.57 yards per rush and totaled 12 rushing touchdowns in 21 career games at FSU.
Corbin was only 113 yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards in 2021 and likely would have reached that mark had he not gotten limited with injuries.
Corbin surprised many with his ability to score on long touchdown runs. He also totaled 44 receptions and 259 rushing yards, with one receiving touchdown.
Thoughts
It’s probably the right move for Corbin. He’s unlikely to improve his draft stock that much with another year, not to mention the risk of getting injured again.
If he gets drafted, that starts the clock on the opportunity for a second NFL contract, which could set him up for life if he’s productive. Either way, he probably makes more money by leaving FSU than staying another year.
FSU coaches have a decision to make at the position. I think it’s likely they take a player from the transfer portal unless they somehow pull the upset and land four-star recruit Jovantae Barnes.
They have Treshaun Ward, Lawrence Toafili, and DJ Williams returning next year, but Corbin had more rushing yards than all three combined in 2021. Good luck to Jashaun Corbin, who ran hard every time he wore the garnet and gold!
