FSU football: Top 3 substantial offensive improvements in 2021
By Kelvin Hunt
Red Zone Offense
The red zone is an area I highlighted for improvement before the 2021 season began. FSU wasted tons of scoring opportunities last season, and it was good to see that wasn’t the case in 2021.
The Noles scored in the red zone 74.19 percent(No. 111 nationally) of the time in 2020, scoring a touchdown 61.29 percent (No. 68 nationally). However, the 2021 season saw the Noles much more efficient when they got into a position to score.
They scored in the red zone 90.48 percent (No. 19 nationally) of the time in 2021, scoring a touchdown 73.81 percent (No. 7 nationally).
That’s lights out efficiency and the highest red zone scoring percentage since the 2017 season (91.68 percent) and the highest touchdown percentage since 2016 (77.19 percent).
Again, we have to remember the context of Jordan Travis only appearing in about 65 percent of the offensive plays in 2021.
This bodes well for the Noles in 2022 with almost all of their production returning from 2021, along with some potential playmakers from the transfer portal and the development of younger players.
