Is Brent Venables heading to Oklahoma the first chink in Clemson’s armor?

A huge crack may have formed in the foundation of the Clemson Tigers. Defensive coordinator Brent Venables has reportedly agreed to take the head coaching job at Oklahoma, according to reports Sunday night.

Venables was at Oklahoma from 1999-2011 before becoming the defensive coordinator at Clemson with Dabo Swinney.

Swinney had a run of generational quarterbacks that led their offenses for several years, but it was Venable’s defenses that played the biggest part in helping Clemson win two national championships and multiple ACC titles.

The video below is something FSU football fans have been waiting for since forever:

Stability and continuity are underrated, but FSU football fans have experienced how both can sustain success with Bobby Bowden and Mickey Andrews terrorizing college football for over two decades.

Clemson’s defense is the only reason they won 10 games as their offense ranked among the worst in the nation. Venables’s reputation spoke for itself, and high-quality players have flocked to Clemson to play for him.

There’s no question Clemson has money to pay a reputable defensive coordinator, but it’s going to be hard to replace someone like Venables. Clemson has five blue-chip defensive players committed for their 2022 recruiting class.

Will they lose any of them with Venables leaving? One of them seemed to be trending towards Michigan about 10 days ago. Clemson has seen a couple of players enter the transfer portal over the past week or so.

That’s the No. 36 player overall and No. 7 cornerback Daylen Everette, a Clemson commit reacting to the news.

Will more take that route with Venables leaving? Maybe some of those commits will follow him to Oklahoma? I suppose it depends on who Dabo Swinney hires ultimately, but there’s a great chance he won’t be able to land someone of that quality again.

There are not many Brent Venables around, and this could be just what FSU needed to find a way to catch Clemson the same way Clemson caught FSU a few years ago.
