FSU football: Top 5 takeaways from ‘Noles 2021 season

The Program Is Heading In The Right Direction
I know people want to focus on wins and losses, and that’s fair. However, we have to include context for the macro point of view. FSU improved in almost every conceivable metric over last year.
FSU ranked No. 40 overall in FEI advanced metrics before the Florida game and ranked No. 103 overall by the same metric after an eight-game schedule in 2020. That’s an incredible improvement considering they played without their starting quarterback in three games. It’s the highest they have finished since ranking No. 30 at the end of the 2017 season.
This team is less talented than the 2018 and 2019 teams, and that improvement points to better coaching. The other thing that points to the program heading in the right direction is recruiting. FSU could finish the 2022 cycle with nine players in the top 200 and 5-6 in the top 100.
They’ve also addressed the quarterback position and offensive line, along with other players that could develop into quality pieces.
They should also have an easier time landing quality players from the transfer portal since they have proof of concept with Jermaine Johnson, Keir Thomas, Jammie Robinson, and Dillan Gibbons. The coaches can point to all of the close losses to these recruits as the missing pieces to get the Noles back to national prominence.
I believe once this coaching staff gets the needed talent at key positions, they’ll begin to run through average teams and reach that next tier to recruit elite talent across the board.
