The news of FSU football third-string quarterback Chubba Purdy entering his name into the transfer portal caught fans off-guard Wednesday afternoon.

The freshman quarterback has been injured much of his time in Tallahassee, but many thought he had a shot at competing with Jordan Travis for the starting quarterback spot in 2022.

After all, McKenzie Milton declined to go into the UMASS game a couple of weeks ago so Chubba Purdy and Tate Rodemaker could get some reps in a real game.

Purdy looked impressive even though it was against arguably the worst defense in FBS football, and now Milton’s gestured seemed for naught. The Noles are down to three scholarship quarterbacks to complete the next four regular-season games.

Milton is still the backup quarterback, but both he and Travis have dealt with injuries all season. That would leave Tate Rodemaker, who has one start and 29 career passing attempts in his college career.

Milton finishes his career with college football after the 2021 season, and four-star quarterback AJ Duffy plans to graduate high school and enroll in the spring.

That would leave Jordan Travis, Tate Rodemaker, and Duffy as the only scholarship QB’s on the roster. I wrote about Mike Norvell’s options after the Purdy news broke. After thinking about it, I think the best thing to do is look for a graduate transfer to enroll in the spring.
