FSU football: Reaction to Chubba Purdy entering transfer portal
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football has had question marks at quarterback since Deondre Francois got injured in the 2017 season opener against Alabama.
Jimbo Fisher’s inability to recruit the position and abruptly quitting put Willie Taggart in a comprising position upon his hire in December in 2017. Taggart didn’t address the position during his short tenure, which meant Mike Norvell faced the same issues upon his hire in December 2019.
However, Norvell addressed the quarterback issue by signing two quarterbacks during the Early Signing Period, including former blue-chip Chubba Purdy. Purdy was a Louisville commit before flipping to the Noles at the last minute. Purdy got to Tallahassee in the summer of 2020 and was promptly injured during the team’s first scrimmage, breaking his collarbone.
However, he saw action as a true freshman for an injured Jordan Travis, making his first career start against NC State. However, complications to the previous injury called for another surgery, which ultimately cost him the rest of the season and 2021 spring camp. Purdy spent most of that time at home in Arizona, and there were rumors he wouldn’t return to Tallahassee.
However, he returned, working behind Jordan Travis and McKenzie Milton but seemed to struggle most of the time. However, he began to pick things up and finally made an appearance against UMASS a couple of weeks ago, finishing a perfect 5 of 5 with two touchdowns and 98 passing yards.
Purdy was thought to have a shot at winning the starting quarterback job in 2022 but decided to enter his name into the transfer portal Wednesday afternoon:
Thoughts
I wasn’t expecting Purdy to leave now, but it’s best for all involved for that process to begin as soon as possible. It will allow Purdy to find a new home in time to enroll next spring and provide Mike Norvell with an opportunity to sign another quarterback in the 2022 class.
FSU already has 2022 blue-chip quarterback AJ Duffy committed, who’s expected to enroll in spring 2022. Good luck to Chubba Purdy!
