Offense

I love Jordan Travis. I love his heart and determination, but it’s as simple as this. If you take his legs away, he can’t beat good or great defenses, and Saturday’s game was a prime example.

Travis made a few nice throws in the game, but he’s not consistent enough as a passer to make defenses respect him as a quarterback.

Clemson loaded the box and brought pressure most of the night, and we saw Travis unable to make plays. We also saw the offensive line hurt drives with untimely false starts, and those penalties were drive killers as well.

It’s the same issue we had earlier in the season. Travis finished the game 14 of 22 for 176 yards, and 75 of those came on a herculean touchdown play by Lawrance Toafili.

It was a great pass by Travis, but if you take that play away, 100 passing yards won’t beat a good defense.

I don’t want this to come off as me bashing the kid, but he’s limited as a quarterback. That’s just the fact of the matter. Travis had Keyshawn Helton wide open for a touchdown and overthrew the pass. If he connects on that pass, it might have been a different ballgame.

The kid has given everything to this program, but it’s not enough to beat great defenses. I know some people thought the playcalling was bad, but I didn’t have a problem with it for the most part. There were plays I thought he could have used his legs more but he kept trying to find a receiver down field. Other times, he ran backwards and he never looked comfortable out there under pressure.

They couldn’t run the ball and couldn’t pass it consistently enough to open up the run. It’s as simple as that.
