How Does Player-Led Happen?

Mike Norvell and the coaching staff must continue to set expectations and hold the players accountable. Mike Norvell must hold the coaches accountable as well.

The other thing that will help is continuing to win games. Winning reinforces the idea of believing in what the coaches are asking them to do each day at practice. The last part that will eventually take over is infusing the team with better talent. Players like Travis Hunter Jr, Sam McCall, and AJ Duffy can help change things quickly.

They all come in with notoriety from their recruiting ranking and have the mindset to help change the program. They already understand the expectation and where this program has been the past few years. It’ll be similar to players like Lamarcus Joyner, Telvin Smith, and Rashad Greene joining the program years ago.

Once older players understand they will lose playing time, that will result in one of two things. They will get with the program or hit the transfer portal. We’ve already seen a great deal of that since Mike Norvell arrived in December 2019. We’ve seen improvements in the program that hasn’t resulted in a lot of wins.

There is no quit in this team, and they play hard, unlike a couple of years ago. However, learning to win is a process, just like FSU didn’t become mediocre overnight.

These growing pains will continue, but the consistency will come as long as Mike Norvell recruits the right players and coaches uphold the standard until players are ready to lead.
