I know the first thing someone will say is the defense gave up 41 points. While that’s true, they held Notre Dame to 6.16 yards per play, which includes a couple of plays that were tough catches for Notre Dame receivers. They held Notre Dame to 35 percent conversions on third down and had nine tackles for loss and four sacks.

Aside from their opening possession that went 75 yards, here’s a look at where they started their drives:

  • Notre Dame 46
  • Notre Dame 45
  • Notre Dame 7
  • Notre Dame 25
  • FSU 48 (Off FSU turnover)
  • Notre Dame 32
  • Notre Dame 25
  • Notre Dame 31 (off FSU turnover)
  • Notre Dame 32(off FSU turnover)
  • Notre Dame 25

All things considered, FSU is lucky the defense played as well because this game could have gotten ugly. Notre Dame had three possessions that began at mid-field, not to mention the FSU offense turning the ball over on back-to-back possessions.

There are some things to clear up, but this defense looks much different than what we saw in game one last year. If they can clean up some of the missed tackles, I think they will take their chances on those 1-on-1 battles the defensive backs lost since they were in good position on those plays.
