FSU’s Run Game Is Legit

I know folks wanted to attribute FSU’s success in the run game to the Jordan Travis effect last season.

I tried over and over to tell folks the FSU run game was legitimate, even when you remove Jordan Travis from the equation.

The ‘Noles running backs all averaged 4.95 yards per rush or more last year. We saw more of the same whenever Mike Norvell committed to running the ball Sunday night. The FSU coaching staff called several screenplays or gadget-type plays on their first two possessions that resulted in negative yardage.

Jashaun Corbin broke through for an 89-yard touchdown run, but it wasn’t until later in the game that FSU began to establish their running game. The three-headed monster of Corbin, Treshaun Ward, and Lawrance Toafili ran through the Notre Dame defense to the tune of nearly 250 rushing yards.

All three running backs averaged 5.7 yards or more per rush. They were physical and tough to bring down on almost every run, which seemed to surprised Notre Dame’s defense.

I think this is something we’ll see more of as they work on getting the passing game going in the right direction.
