FSU football: A legitimate QB competition means good news for the Noles
By Kelvin Hunt
When was the last time FSU football had a real QB battle? Maybe when Jameis Winston beat out Jacob Coker before the 2013 season?
Winston was the presumed starter going into 2014. Everett Golson was brought in to start in 2015, and Deondre Francois beat out an injured Sean Maguire going into the 2016 season.
Francois was the presumed starter going into 2017 and was named the starter in 2018, although he missed all of spring and summer rehabbing.
I think some folks wanted to pencil in McKenzie Milton into the starting role as soon as he arrived in Tallahassee. Heck, I was one of those, but I think we all forgot Jordan Travis didn’t practice at all last offseason due to the COVID shutdown and injuries.
This guy played last season in a new offense, paired down with no offseason, without practicing.
If McKenzie Milton didn’t come to FSU football, would Jordan Travis be pushed to improve this rapidly?
I doubt it because the young guys on the team lack the experience to push him to get better. However, Travis not conceding the job as soon as Milton arrived in Tallahassee is making Milton better too. That means both players will raise their level of play, which will make FSU a better team no matter who the starter is in 2021.
