FSU football: A legitimate QB competition means good news for the Noles
By Kelvin Hunt
Remember, FSU started four different quarterbacks in 2020? James Blackman was the only one of the four with any real starting experience in college.
What happened? The quarterback play was atrocious outside of a healthy Jordan Travis making things happen with his legs.
However, when he was limited with injuries or out of the game completely? A limited offense became worse because there was no experience behind him.
That shouldn’t be the case in 2021, no matter who wins the quarterback job. I wrote how I expect QB play to improve in 2021 with both guys seeing the field a few weeks ago.
I expect both guys to play and it looks like Travis will be more than a guy that scrambles with his legs and attempts shot players vertically.
That’s good news because Travis depending more on his arm will limit the number of hits he takes in the run game. However, if he gets banged up, there’s McKenzie Milton to pick up the slack.
The inverse would be true if Milton were the starter and Travis had to come in the game. Milton wasn’t necessarily injury-prone during his time at UCF, but the injury he suffered will have folks holding their breath until he proves he can take a couple of hits and get up unscathed.
I know the old adage if you’re playing two quarterbacks, you don’t have a true No. 1. However, I will take two competent quarterbacks instead of what FSU football has featured the last few yrs. That’s no disrespect to James Blackman because he was thrust into an impossible situation, and I hope he balls out at Arkansas State.
