FSU football: Top 5 dark horse players going into 2021 season
By Kelvin Hunt
Marcus Cushnie
FSU’s lack of a pass rush has been about as bad as the offensive line the last few seasons. The Noles had zero sacks from the defensive end position in 2020.
The crazy part? Both starting defensive ends are on NFL teams at the moment! However, Mike Norvell and the coaching staff addressed the need via the transfer portal.
One of the biggest additions was Georgia’s transfer, Jermaine Johnson. However, a late addition from Alabama A&M could be a guy that surprises a lot of people.
Enter Marcus Cushnie. The 6’2″ and 250 pounder was productive at the FCS level and looks to have the burst off the line of scrimmage to make an impact at FSU.
Cushnie has a good motor and an array of moves that should make him productive. However, the biggest X-factor is the motivation to prove he belongs in the ACC, coming from the SWAC conference where he was dominant.
Teams may focus more on Johnson, which could allow Cushnie to make more plays. A bonus is Cushnie has experience as a linebacker and could help there if situations call for it.
