FSU football: Can the ACC survive another conference realignment?
By Kelvin Hunt
Conference realignment is back with reports of Oklahoma and Texas looking to join the SEC Conference.
The ACC Conference survived the last round of conference realignment when things didn’t look so good. The ACC got Notre Dame to join in all sports except football and made it incredibly difficult for current teams to leave.
The keyword is survived, as the conference remains well behind the SEC and Big 10 conferences when it comes to revenue.
One of the things that helped the ACC survive was the exit fees imposed, essentially locking in schools unless they paid 50 million to leave.
FSU did not support the move and was one of two schools to object to the measure. Maryland was the other who opted to leave the conference for the Big 10 in the 2014-15 academic year.
Can FSU football get out of the ACC? I’m not sure, but if they can’t, the ACC needs to make moves fast. They need to entertain Notre Dame entering the conference full time and poaching teams from other conferences.
I’m not talking about the leftovers from the Big 12 as no one cares about Texas Tech, TCU, and Baylor in college football.
If they could get Notre Dame to join, they could potentially poach some teams from the Big 10. If the ACC doesn’t make a major move like this, they will become obsolete and will not be able to compete with the SEC or Big 10.
Truthfully, it was already heading in that way, but the SEC looks like they are trying to expedite that process.
How Does This Affect FSU?
If FSU football stays in the ACC, they are only delaying the evitable. They should look to try to find a way out of the league and join the SEC or Big 10 if possible. If the Big 10 raided the ACC for FSU, Clemson, and North Carolina, they could compete with the SEC.
There is a rumor the SEC has reached out to FSU, Clemson, and Ohio State from the Big 10. However, I’m not sure if that smoke is legitimate. If it’s true, at least FSU is entertaining the thought of making a move sooner than later.
Otherwise, I don’t see how FSU or the ACC will survive the rounds of realignment.
