FSU football: How Noles could benefit from Arizona State investigation
By Kelvin Hunt
Had you noticed FSU football was competing with Arizona State for several blue-chip recruits recently?
ASU was in several final lists of blue-chip players with schools that have been traditional powerhouses. It’s something that caught my eye, and I couldn’t put my finger on it.
However, a report by Yahoo Sports has begun to shed light on the situation. Arizona State is being investigated by the NCAA for a ton of possible recruiting violations.
It sounds like it’s something that will push commits and potential targets away from ASU:
How can the Noles benefit from this situation? Arizona State has two players committed in their 2022 recruiting class that have some sort of tie to FSU:
- Alonzo Allen-No. 280 overall, No. 19 blue-chip safety
- Jaylin Marshall-No. 352 overall, No. 23 blue-chip safety
Both players hail from South Florida, with Allen coming from Hallandale High and Marshall from Miami Central High (home of Dalvin Cook).
Allen received an offer from Willie Taggart’s staff and visited Mike Norvell’s staff at FSU in March 2020, which was one of the last opportunities to visit colleges before the pandemic shut everything down.
Marshall is a player the Noles have offered more recently as of May 4th, and Marshall officially visited Pittsburgh last week.
I wouldn’t be surprised to see both players de-commit from the ASU recruiting class at some point. I doubt FSU would take both, but they could take one or the other.
Interestingly, FSU offered Marshall most recently, and he has shown interest in the Noles, although he has been committed to ASU since February.
The coaching staff has done an amazing job of getting players on campus this month. It’s worth paying attention to if the staff can get these players on campus soon. If so, I think it’s something to keep an eye on.
