Why Is FSU In So Many Life and Death Games with Lesser Programs?

If we look at the 2021 schedule, there are about three games where most anyone would be comfortable predicting FSU football would win:

  • Jacksonville State
  • UMASS
  • Syracuse

If FSU football theoretically has the more talented team, why do they have so many games that most consider toss-up games?

Why have they been losing or going life and death with the likes of Wake Forest, NC State, and Louisville over the past couple of years? Granted, they beat NC State and Louisville in 2019.

Have those teams recruited better at quarterback or in the trenches? Have they developed the three-stars better than FSU developed their players?

I think the answer to both of those questions is yes. I think the biggest question going into 2021 is, has FSU made up enough ground in the transfer portal to beat those teams?

FSU wasn’t able to implement all of their offensive and defensive schemes without a real offseason.

The quarterback position will have more experience and more time in the scheme. Will quarterback play improve enough to be a difference-maker against these teams? It’s possible, but the defensive line has to play better in the trenches to give the Noles a real shot in these toss-up games.
