FSU football: 3-star commit Devaughn Mortimer focused only on Noles
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football recruiting is about to kick into full swing once the NCAA dead period ends on June 1st. The coaching staff will be hosting a ton of prospective players and commits on campus in the coming weeks.
One of those commits that plan to be on campus is three-star commit Devaughn Mortimer from South Florida.
Mortimer committed to the Noles in mid-March and has quietly begun to emerge as more footage of him in action has appeared this spring.
Mortimer spoke after a recent spring game and this to say about his future plans.
Mortimer is a player the coaching staff evaluated and offered right out of Miami’s backyard at Miami Central. Some people thought they offered him because he’s a teammate of former FSU commit Nyjalik Kelly, but that wasn’t the case as Mortimer brings a lot of ability to the wide receiver position. Check out these recent clips below:
Folks in the comments section say Mortimer reminds them of former FSU wide receivers D.J. Matthews and Kenny Shaw, and I thought those are decent comparisons. Mortimer is shifty like Matthews and Shaw but has much better top-end speed with a verified 10.7 laser time in the 100 meters. His coach has gone on record that he’s never seen Mortimer drop a pass, and every clip I’ve seen of him seems to project that he has great hands.
He should be a nightmare in the slot of Mike Norvell’s offense, and it’s great he’s only focused on getting to FSU and not looking for attention in the recruiting world.
The wide receiver position has been one of mostly disappointment over the past few years aside from Tamorrion Terry. However, the coaching staff has brought in some talented players who’ll look to make a name for themselves in the garnet and gold.
