Not Being An Early Enrollee Will Hurt

If Destyn Hill were an early enrollee, I wouldn’t hesitate at all in naming him as a freshman impact player. I’m not still not hesitating, but I do want to be cautious of expectations.

As great as Rashad Greene was, he hauled in 38 receptions, 596 yards, and seven touchdowns in only nine games his freshman year.

Rashad Greene wasn’t an early enrollee as a freshman either. If you could guarantee Destyn Hill would have that type of production in 12 games, I would do cartwheels up and down the road in front of my house right now.

I’d also predict FSU football would win at least seven games minimum. That type of production is rare, but we did see some production from freshmen in a season where they had virtually no spring or fall camp to learn the offense.

Last season was similar to a freshman season without being an early enrollee for the wide receivers.

The pandemic had them trying to learn a new offense without having much practice time. The good news is Hill will arrive in time to join player-led workouts before beginning fall camp, and the reps will be plentiful. However, the experience Malik McClain and Joshua Burrell gained in spring camp is invaluable.

That lack of experience will likely limit Hill, but hopefully, he’ll begin to find his groove as the season progresses.
