FSU baseball: How Noles rallied to clinch series win over Clemson
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (28-19, 19-14 ACC) used a big eighth inning to rally past Clemson 9-6 to clinch the series win Sunday afternoon.
The game didn’t start in the ‘Noles favor at all, with Clemson batters finding some holes in the first inning to score four runs off starting pitcher Parker Messick.
Two of those hits were not well-hit balls at all, more like Texas league Judy hits. Nevertheless, the Noles found themselves in a big hole and had to respond.
The FSU offense got it going in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 4-3, which seemed to spark Messick on the mound. However, his dominance energized the offense more as they scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning to give the Noles a 5-4 lead.
Messick held the Tigers scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when he allowed a two-run home run which gave the Tigers a 6-5 lead.
It wasn’t until the bottom of the eighth until the ‘Noles offense could get it going again, scoring four runs to give the Noles a 9-6 lead for the win. Davis Hare had a big pinch-hit that scored two runs. Jack Anderson came on in the top of the ninth to send the Tigers down in order to clinch the series.
Messick finished the game with six innings, 10 strikeouts, one walk, one hit batter, and five earned runs.
The FSU offense pounded out 12 hits with the bottom of the lineup, sparking the offense for the first time in forever. Jackson Greene and Nander De Sedas had two hits, with Greene finishing with two RBI’s. Tyler Martin finished 3-5 with two RBI’s.
FSU batters took advantage of two Clemson errors and nine Clemson walks and only struck out six times.
It was a great way to end the regular season at Dick Howser Stadium and was their fifth three-game series win in a row.
