FSU football: Noles land Notre Dame transfer OL Dillan Gibbons
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football coaches have been patient with the transfer portal when it comes to the offensive line.
Nole fans have often questioned what they were waiting for when it came to the position with two scholarships open in the 2021 class.
It looks like we found one of those answers Monday night when Notre Dame graduate transfer Dillan Gibbons announced he was committing to the Noles.
Gibbons dropped the news via his Twitter account:
Gibbons checks in at 6’4″ and 309 pounds at the offensive guard position. Gibbon saw action in 29 games at Notre Dame and can play all three interior positions.
One of the biggest caveats here is he has two years of eligibility left, which is more than just a band-aid at the position.
Gibbons expects to contend for a starting position immediately, and that does two things. It helps with depth and forces players on FSU’s offensive line to step up their game or get surpassed on the depth chart.
Gibbons is originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, and attended Clearwater Central Catholic. It’s the second offensive lineman Alex Atkins has landed within the last week, with 2022 offensive tackle Aliou Bah announcing his commitment a couple of days ago.
FSU football coaches have shown some moxie when it comes to the offensive line and the transfer portal. I think they must feel okay about the offensive tackle position, or Gibbons was too good of an option to pass up. It’s probably a combination of the two, but I’m sure the two years of eligibility remaining were attractive. It’ll allow a couple of younger players to continue developing without forcing them into action too early while giving the Noles an experienced offensive lineman in the trenches.
I’m probably reading too much into it, but FSU plays Notre Dame in the 2021 opener. I’m sure it can’t hurt to pick his brain as much as possible regarding what Notre Dame likes to do on offense!
