2014-15

I’m using the second picture in Connelly’s tweet entitled Florida State week-to-week SP+ rankings.

We remember the 2014 season of the Noles losing most of the first half of games only to roar back in the second half to put teams away.

We can see the offense was elite for most of the year with Jameis Winston, Dalvin Cook, and Rashad Greene. However, the defense didn’t play up to the level of talent on that team.

What’s the first thing you notice on the chart in 2015? Once Winston leaves the offense takes a huge dive south, and the defense follows along.

Sean Maguire and Notre Dame transfer Everett Golson take over at quarterback, and neither could get the offense close to where it was in the previous couple of years.

However, the defense rebounds nicely under Charles Kelly(helped by playing a slate of weak offenses) and carries the team to 10 wins.

This 2015 season and the subsequent one shows how important good quarterback play can help a team win games.
