The injury bug continues to plague the team.

Emmett Rice is the latest in a string of injuries that include Demorie Tate, Chubba Purdy, Leonard Warner, and Thomas Shrader.

Players projected to play many snaps are still rehabbing. Jordan Wilson, Devontae Love-Taylor, Meiko Dotson, Renardo Green, and Akeem Dent are all expected to be major contributors but can’t participate.

Keir Thomas has yet to practice, which is asking some serious questions about the defensive line depth. Baveon Johnson returned from his ailments, and he had to come into the fire and take snaps at center.

Thankfully, the injured parties are staying engaged, but it will be difficult to gauge how good defensive starters are when going against depleted offense and vice-versa. How can you even gauge your unit’s skill when half of them are in scooters or walking boots?

This has forced position flexibility across the entire roster. Zane Herring has gotten snaps at center. DJ Lundy is moving to Mike LB for depth. Jarques McClellion has moved to safety then caught the injury bug.

It’s easy to see now why this team values versatility.
It’s not hard to see why we have been so bad in recent years because it seems like every year there are these issues and key players miss a significant amount of time.

This team doesn’t have the depth to sustain injuries en mass and be successful. The best thing to do is to fortify our depth via the transfer portal and to develop the young players, should they remain healthy.
