FSU baseball: Takeaways from Noles dominating Florida and Miami
By Kelvin Hunt
Total Domination Pitching
FSU pitchers tossed 36 innings against the Florida Gators and Miami Hurricanes. They faced 139 batters, and the stat line will blow you away.
They only allowed four earned runs, struck out 40 batters, allowed 12 walks, and 17 hits.
That’s 28.7 percent of their at-bats ending in a strikeout and over a strikeout per inning average with a better than 3 to 1 strikeout to walk ratio.
That’s a batting average of .122 against two top 10 ranked teams, and Nole pitchers didn’t allow a single home run.
The key to their success was their ability to get ahead in the count. It’s something we saw opposing pitchers do against FSU hitters early in the season.
Once pitchers get ahead in the count, they put the hitter on the defensive, and it’s easier to get an out at that point.
They avoided walks, and the FSU defense was stellar, only committing two errors over the four-game stretch.
Mike Martin Jr. has his weekend rotation set with Parker Messick, Bryce Hubbart, and Conor Grady. Carson Montgomery is the mid-week starter, and those four can go up against any offense and find success when they perform the way they’ve done.
FSU’s bullpen has been amazing as they didn’t allow a single run in these four games.
