FSU football has completed its fourth spring practice, and one of the first things FSU head coach Mike Norvell spoke about was the team’s mindset.

FSU football has had issues with overcoming adversity and overall mindset for years. It dates back to the 2014 season when the team would get into huge deficits early and had to fight and claw their way back.

That team could handle adversity, but it was coming out not ready to play from the onset that was the issue.

That trend of folding when adversity struck seemed to grow roots in 2019. The team turned into front runners, playing well when they had a lead, but folding at the first sign of adversity.

The Boise State, Louisiana-Monroe, and Louisville games were examples of the Noles blowing huge leads and losing or nearly doing so.

That trend continued in 2020, FSU blew huge leads against North Carolina and Duke. They held on  to win against UNC, but the Duke game showed FSU could swing momentum back in their favor and finish off the job.

Mike Norvell and the coaching staff is putting heavy emphasis on momentum swings and reacting to adversity in games. It was to discern if he was completely happy with the entire practice but did mention the team finished up strong towards the end. Anytime a coach used the word solid, it usually means it wasn’t to standards.

The other thing apparent is the level of competition at different positions. It’s something the Noles have missed, but Norvell mentioned competition at the defensive backs and linebacker positions specifically. Jackson West continues to get praise as a freshman, and that’s the culture needed to get the program where they want to go.

This spring is going to be a huge difference-maker, and there seems to be a quiet confidence with everything surrounding the program right now.
