FSU baseball: ‘Noles power aids comeback win against Virginia Tech
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU baseball (5-5, 3-4 ACC) overcame a tough start and battled back to win 6-4 against No. 18 Virginia Tech.
The game began as most ACC games, the Noles getting behind early and the offense struggling mightily to do anything.
FSU batters struck out 11 times through the first five innings and only managed an infield hit. They looked completely lost in the batters’ box.
However, they caught fire after that with eight hits, including two home runs to
The game was much of what we talked about in the preview. Both teams struggled defensively with two errors that led to runs.
Virginia Tech got half of their runs via the long ball, we talked about their power numbers in the preview, but luckily the Noles limited them to solo shots.
FSU pitchers were outstanding, with two earned runs allowed, 14 strikeouts, and two walks. They also did a great job of getting out of trouble as they forced Virginia Tech to strand 10 runners on base.
Robbie Martin and Matheu Nelson led the Noles with two hits apiece. Reese Albert continues to struggle, striking out four times but had a big home run in the seventh inning to cut Virginia Tech’s lead to one.
Parting Thoughts
FSU pitching continues to carry this team, but maybe the momentum the Noles found in the second half of the game will carry over to Saturday’s game.
The hitters looked more confident and produced once Virginia Tech went to their bullpen. I’m still trying to figure out why they struggled so much with the Virginia Tech starter? He was throwing fastballs away and wasn’t mixing his pitches up much.
The umpire did have a generous strike zone, but they shouldn’t have struggled that much against someone like that.
The Noles will look to clinch the series win Saturday at 4 p.m. with Bryce Hubbart on the mound.
