FSU football spring practice Tuesday, and Mike Norvell was pleased with how things got underway.

One facet Mike Norvell puts added emphasis on is special teams. It was the first thing he mentioned in his introductory press conference, and we saw flashes of that emphasis in the first game of the year in 2020.

The Noles blocked five field goals/punts in only nine games in 2020, and that’s more than any season dating back as far as 2009.

The special teams unit went into last season with a ton of questions because almost all of the players in certain positions have little to no experience.

There was a freshman punter, redshirt freshman kicker, a walk-on punter, and a walk-on placekicker.

I expected quite a bit of inconsistency and wasn’t sure how much Mike Norvell would lean on those young players.

Here’s a stat for you, Mike Norvell went for it on fourth down 28 times and attempted 14 field goals in nine games.

Some of that was Norvell playing the percentages and converting fourth downs 53.57 percent of the time.

The other part was FSU placekickers only converted eight of 14 attempts. I’ve written on the solid season punter Alex Mastromanno had in 2020. He should be the starter at that position.

Let’s take a look at some special team questions with it still being early in spring camp.
