FSU basketball: Noles slide to projected No. 5 seed in latest Bracketology
By Kelvin Hunt
No. 15 FSU basketball (15-5, 11-4 ACC) may not have lost only the ACC Regular Season Title with their loss against Notre Dame Saturday.
The Noles dropped to the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament and project as a No. 5 seed in the latest Bracketology by ESPN’s Joe Lunardi.
FSU was as high as a No. 3 seed before losses against North Carolina and Notre Dame in two of their final three games of the season.
FSU fans tried to blow off a blown lead loss against UNC, but as I told folks then, losses in the regular season dictate the seedings in the national tournaments.
Losses to mediocre teams or those below .500 never look good in the eyes of the committee. Most projections had the Noles in the Region 3 Indianapolis bracket, where Michigan is the projected No. 1 seed.
The latest projections find the Noles in the Region 1 bracket, with overall No. 1 seed Gonzaga. Not only that, the Noles would face the winner of the Colorado State/Xavier game in the first round.
FSU basketball has a history with Xavier and Gonzaga in recent years in the national tournament. The Noles lost to Xavier in the second round of the 2017 tournament and lost to Gonzaga in the Sweet 16 in the 2019 tournament.
FSU could improve its national seeding should they win the ACC Tournament that’s underway. The Noles need only three wins after receiving a double-bye with their No. 2 seeding.
It’s unlikely they’ll become a No. 2 seed or better, but they could regain the No. 3 seed projection they once had if they perform well in the tournament.
The NCAA Tournament is all about matchups and playing well over a small stretch of games. The better the seeding, the better your chances are of surviving and advancing to the next round.
Here’s to hoping the Noles can put it together for three games and win the ACC Tournament for an opportunity to get a better national seeding.
