Alex Mastromanno

I know you’re thinking, who’s Alex Mastromannno? Well, he’s the punter who had the best freshman season for a punter in the last decade or so.

The punter position was one concern I had regarding special teams going into the season, but Mastromanno proved he’ll be a strength moving forward, unlike the past few seasons.

Mastromanno was named FSU Special Teams Freshman of the Year and averaged 43.5 yards per punt and a net average of 41.34 yards per punt.

The latter ranking No. 16 in the NCAA. The length of the punts was impressive, but the ability to not allow teams to return punts was important as well.

Mastromanno had 16 of his 35 punts to be fair caught, with four punts over 50 yards and seven that landed inside the 20-yard line.

That’s not bad for a freshman who started playing American football fewer than a couple of years ago. If Mastromanno can continue to develop, he could be FSU’s best punter since Shawn Powell.
