FSU football: Projected offensive skill depth chart for spring 2021
By Cole Maines
TE: Camren McDonald, Jordan Wilson, Wyatt Rector, Jackson West
I wanted to separate this group as I did with the wideouts and running back, but there aren’t enough numbers to do that. Other sites have talked about the possibility of seeing a lot of attrition from this unit, and we honestly can’t afford it.
I’ll say that it doesn’t bode well for the young players taken in last year’s recruiting class that a walk-on saw more minutes than they did at this position.
And that is no shade to Preston Daniel because he had a great season, but this belabors the point that this unit is thin. The only proven commodity here is McDonald, so I won’t expound much on him.
This unit is bad considering Coach Mike Norvell’s love for tight ends in his system. In that system, there is usually a prototypical blocking tight end and then a pass-catching tight end.
West can be both and is prolific in both when you watch his high school tape. He also has early enrolled putting him in a better position to contribute earlier, which is especially helpful given the situation in the tight end room.
Wilson was a transfer from last year who suffered a season-ending Achilles injury but again is more of a blocker. He will be vital because he will be a primary blocker, and would have been a difference-maker for the Noles last season.
Wilson returning will allow McDonald to flex out or West to flex out when paired up, and that should be a potent combination for the Noles.
Overall, this unit should be improved and will have better depth.
