Ja’khi Douglas

I have been very excited about Douglas’ addition to the class since the early signing day. I think I have mentioned him in every article I have written. I have been very encouraged by his progression through his first season.

Douglas was here for the winter conditioning, and it helped him in his position change. He was originally supposed to be a pure wide receiver but has become a hybrid RB/WR.

At RB he had few touches but played outside the tackles and was a solid change of pace option along with Toafili. Douglas played wide receiver for the most part and struggled early with drops.

Then came the layoff, and he exploded against Duke for 77 yards and two touchdowns and caught all three of his targets. Douglas became massively improved just in that short frame.

He also became an impact player on special teams getting a block, muffed punt recovery, and 158 return yards. His speed set him apart from other return candidates as Corbin was mainly a blocker, and Helton was limited, still recovering from his knee injury.

I think he and Wren will play similar roles and will be a dynamic element of the offense due to their speed and abilities. I could see them moved around to exploit mismatches and could see them schemed open for easy touchdowns.
