Chubba Purdy

The young, former blue-chip quarterback is a darkhorse candidate for “impact player status.” Chubba Purdy had his development stunted just as it was getting started.

The young quarterback suffered a broken collarbone in early August during a scrimmage and didn’t see any game action until October 24th against Louisville. He then saw game action again versus Pittsburgh in relief for the injured Jordan Travis.

During the Louisville game, he was betrayed by drops across the wide receiver corp. Against Pitt, a limited playbook and some poor decision making lead to his first interception in Garnet and Gold.

Against North Carolina State, Purdy got his first start and was on a tight leash to start and had to share time with Tate Rodemaker as the staff hedge their bets and tried to prevent another broken quarterback.

He was let loose in the second half and threw for two touchdowns and 181 yards on 15 completions by the end of the game. He also rushed for 54 yards.

Purdy has already shown flashes of what he is capable of, and he has the most to gain under Milton and Travis. If Milton is healthy, the QB1 job is his, and he got approval from the doctor a few days ago. However, Purdy will be there to compete for the job no doubt.

But when Milton is gone, or god forbid gets hurt, I think Purdy is up next. Travis will likely still be utilized heavily in sub-packages and as a gadget/split role type player, and it will be hard to move him from there and keep the amount of playmaking it will bring.

He did great things at quarterback, but a QB needs to throw slants, posts, and outs, and Travis hasn’t done it much so far.

That’s why I prefer Purdy as QB2 and think he could see playing time soon and make a major impact behind an improved O-line and versatile running game.
