FSU football kicker earns a scholarship.

It’s funny I wrote about FSU football adding walk-on players to its roster and how that impacts a program Thursday.

It wasn’t 24 hours later, and FSU redshirt junior placekicker Parker Grothaus announced he had earned a scholarship to play at FSU.

Grothaus saw action in all nine FSU football games in 2020, participating in kickoff duties and kicking field goals.

He announced the news via his Twitter account Thursday night:

I have to say I’m a bit surprised by the news since they already have redshirt freshman Ryan Fitzgerald on scholarship.

Grothaus was four of seven on field-goal attempts and made 14 of 14 extra-point attempts on the year. He also had 45 kickoffs with 18 touchbacks and usually did a good job of allowing the ball to land near the goal-line to force opposing teams to return the kick.

The Noles allowed an average of 20.83 yards per return, which is better than allowing teams to start at the 25-yard line.

Thoughts

FSU football has had one of the better kicking games in college football over the past two decades. However, they’ve struggled mightily since Roberto Aguayo was selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

His younger brother Ricky Aguayo followed in his footsteps and struggled his final two years after a strong start.

Grothaus and Fitzgerald shared field goal kicking duties in 2020 and went eight of 14 combined on the season. It’s an area that needs to improve quite a bit moving forward, or we’ll likely see Mike Norvell opting to go for more fourth-downs instead of missing chip shot field goals.

Congrats to Parker Grothaus for putting in the work to earn a scholarship, and here’s to hoping the work results in an improvement in the kicking game in 2021!
