FSU Football: The Coach Ham rebuild template for football
By Cole Maines
The future for FSU basketball is bright. With three straight NCAA tournament appearances and two consecutive years going to the Sweet 16 or later, and likely a third had COVID not cause the tournament cancellation in March, the team is clearly on the rise.
Two top 50 recruits are on their way in the most recent class, and quality athletes are contributing regularly. Fans could see this team competing on that level for many years to come, with the possibility of a win here and there as the rise of the basketball program continues.
FSU football faces a longer grind to success during this turnaround. It can accelerate with transfer portal contributors likely on their way. The recent high school signees address roster needs and immediately provide depth and quality to their respective positions.
This is important as it allows the staff to focus on their remaining targets and the team’s off-season conditioning program.
JUCO products will also play a big role in a quick turn around since they are more developed than high school players and can provide veteran leadership.
The biggest thing for the staff is a real off-season. They can install the playbook and adjust and customize the options to the team.
We already saw them adjust on the fly, in-game and mid-week, all season. I think if Fuller knows what this defense can do, they adjust their rotations at certain positions and press the line of scrimmage more with their secondary.
With a normal offseason, does Purdy get hurt? Do we even start Blackman at the beginning of the season?
This period of in-person relationship building, adjustment, and development will create results. Results beget stability. Stability begets buy-in. Buy-in begets better relationships, and players recruit their friends in the portal, at junior colleges, and in high school.
There is now quantifiable buy-in evident and a new-found resilience in the ball club. The FSU football team can establish an upward trajectory similar to what we see from the basketball program. FSU football will soon be back to where it belongs. #KeepCLIMBing
