FSU football: Noles in a tough spot with rest of the season
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football may not be able to finish the rest of the season but needs to.
FSU football has its second consecutive game postponed Saturday due to issues related to COVID-19.
The Noles had been able to avoid any interference regarding the virus since Mike Norvell tested positive in mid-September.
The game last week was postponed, with Clemson football bringing a player that tested positive to Tallahassee.
Saturday’s game against Virginia was postponed because FSU football had at least one positive case and only had 44 scholarship players left after accounting for opt-outs, injuries, and players quarantining after contact tracing.
The players getting infected was the fear of playing the Clemson game, and here were are regardless. The game against Duke may be in jeopardy next week unless players in quarantine test negative throughout the week.
The players need reps in the games, but not at the risk of having players that wouldn’t play in multiple positions(walk-ons). The program needs the money(gate, TV, concessions), and the local economy gets a small boost even though games are not attended like normal due to COVID-19. It becomes more difficult to recruit without any games to show if progress is taking place as well.
When the games get postponed like the last two weeks, everyone involved takes a hit, and that could continue with the virus seemingly skyrocketing all over the nation. The Wake Forest/Miami game next week has already been postponed, and next week hasn’t gotten here yet.
I know some fans want to scrap the season and start working towards next year. However, the players need all the practice reps they can get, and the program needs money. It’s one of the reasons why they waited until the last possible second Saturday to see if they could play the game against Virginia.
However, the safety of the players and coaches is the number one priority. I would exercise patience moving forward because it is a delicate balance regarding risk versus reward.
