FSU football: What’s impact of signature win over No. 5 North Carolina?
By Kelvin Hunt
FSU football got its first signature win in the Mike Norvell era. I take a look at the impact of the win for the program moving forward.
FSU football has been in a perpetual state of mediocrity since the 2017 season. In hindsight, the 2017 season can be blamed on having to start a freshman quarterback and a coach with one foot out of the door during the season.
The next two seasons were a combination of so many variables I don’t want to rehash them, as I’ve covered them all numerous times if you’ve been a reader of the site.
They hadn’t beaten a ranked team since No. 22 Boston College in 2018.
FSU was so terrible on the field, they were never going to be able to get the players they needed to compete with the elite teams in the country.
The other problem was the players they were getting, while talented, were not receiving proper coaching, and the strength and conditioning program was not helping players in their development.
Essentially, the FSU program faced negative recruiting, and their performances on Saturday’s did nothing to negate those narratives.
That’s one of the biggest reasons it was time for Willie Taggart to be let go last season. There was no way he was going to be able to turn the program around, and nothing he had done to that point made it seem otherwise.
There was never a signature win or clear progression with the product on the field. That is not the case with Mike Norvell and his staff in an unprecedented offseason. Mike Norvell got his signature win in game five of his tenure, so let’s talk about the impact of the win over North Carolina Saturday night.
