FSU Football: Top 5 Seminole standouts against North Carolina
By Cole Maines
This program has some momentum after improvement in three consecutive games, which the coaches have to be given credit.
The biggest growth I have seen under this staff has been the O-line play. I said this when I talked about Jordan Travis, but they are miles better than I thought they would be. The transfers and the young players have made impacts and have created gaps for Travis and the running backs to break through while holding up well in pass protection.
The scheme turned what was thought to be a deficiency into strength and whatever Atkins is doing needs to be maintained, and he could be a star coach in the making.
Speaking of star coaching, Mike Norvell has been exceptional. His play-calling has been spot on, and he has held players accountable when they made bad plays or committed dumb penalties and has been the first one to shout them out when they made good plays.
Norvell’s energy is infectious, and this is a new team than it was under Willie Taggart. The play-calling and execution are better, and we saw in game one the improvement on special teams, and that has carried over throughout the season.
Most recently, we see the improvement in the linebacker play and what Coach Marve has done with them from week to week. They finally made the right move and played Stephen Dix instead of Leonard Warner. I don’t know what was going on with the defensive line, but something finally woke up within them, and they played lights out against North Carolina.
The buy-in all around seems to be evident. I do wish the offense didn’t slow down as much, and we can fix some of the discipline issues in both flags and assignments.
I said after the Georgia Tech loss, “I am glad that the team’s mistakes weren’t hidden in a close win,” now I am glad the errors didn’t cost us the momentum we have built over the last two weeks. Next up is Louisville, so let’s continue the CLIMB.
