FSU football is working to find its footing in the Mike Norvell era after a shaky start. However, it looks like progress is being made in two phases.

A lot of FSU football fans are concerned about the defensive side of the ball after four games, where the Noles are giving up an average of 30+ points per game.

Ironically, the Noles are giving up about two points less through their first four games compared to 2019. However, the yards allowed per play and third-down conversions allowed are huge red flags.

The biggest question on social media is, do fans see any improvement at all under Mike Norvell?

I’ve felt it was clear there has been an improvement in two of the three phases, so I wanted to gather more input via a poll, and you can see the results below:

A had some people to message saying the clicked “No” on accident, so the percentage is likely closer to 88 percent that thinks so.

The other 12 percent that say they haven’t seen any improvement, I’m curious as to why you think that’s the case?

The offense has been exponentially better with Jordan Travis at quarterback. The offensive line has been better than last year, and the running back unit has been solid. The penalties like illegal formations are down, and the offense looks more coordinated as a whole.

My only gripe with the offense would be I’d expect more from the wide receivers. Tamorrion Terry has shown up the last two games, and Ontaria Wilson is beginning to emerge, it seems. However, Keyshawn Helton and Warren Thompson have seven combined receptions for less than 100 yards through four games.

Special Teams have been showing up since the first game, where they blocked a couple of field goals and a PAT. Freshman punter Alex Mastromanno is averaging nearly 44 yards per punt, and teams are averaging less than four yards each return.

The special teams did have one error with the “sky kick” that wasn’t executed well just before halftime against Notre Dame. However, I put that on the coaches for calling for it, instead of kicking the ball out of the back of the end zone.

I know there’s a concern for the defense, but already improving two phases of the game is a great sign for this coaching staff considering how the offseason went. Here’s to hoping the defense can begin rounding into a form of decency soon.
