FSU Football: 5 takeaways from the win vs. Jacksonville State
By Cole Maines
THIS OFFENSIVE COACHING STAFF CAN COACH! On offense, the knowledge of Norvell and Dillingham, to notice that Rodemaker wasn’t ready, and to switch to Travis was brilliant. The previous staff would have just left him in, just as they did with Blackman.
Travis came in and was poised and methodical. He didn’t try to force anything too quickly and seemed to control the situation rather than allow the team to continue to lick their wounds and give in.
A lot of credit for that has to make its rounds to Norvell and Dillingham as they were able to manufacture a successful scheme on the fly for someone who didn’t practice much. I loved how the offense when working right, mixed massive and explosive plays with sustained methodical drives.
I enjoyed how heavily they went to the running game. I know much of FSU’s throwing plays have come out of necessity, but the way they established the run and allowed the offensive line to attack and create holes masked that as a deficiency.
Not to mention, we have some damn playmakers in the backfield. Lawerence Taofili was impressive and showed why he was so highly-touted, and he can hit another level in the strength and conditioning program.
Corbin was a solid runner who made good plays, and La’Damian Webb was electric. Webb’s ability to stay on his feet, make people miss, and run with is pads were all on display, and he showed out.
None of that is possible without Atkins bettering the O-line group, the transfers the staff brought in, and the scheme working to better the unit and keep the defense on its heels. I’ve already made my thoughts known about the defensive side of the ball.
