Special Teams

I wrote how one of my five concerns going into the season was inexperience on special teams. Well, a freshman and redshirt freshman is starting at punter and kicker.

Ryan Fitzgerald is the field goal kicker, and Alex Mastromanno is the starting punter.

Travis Jay is the listed starter at punt returner and one of the kickoff returner spots. Jashaun Corbin is the other starter at kickoff returner along with La’Damian Webb and Isaiah Bolden.

Surprisingly, Asante Samuel Jr. and Keyshawn Helton are listed as OR for punt returner along with Travis Jay.

That’s a lot of athleticism and speed in the return positions, as Mike Norvell has placed extra emphasis on special teams making an impact in the games.

Here’s to hoping the young players have ice water in their veins as they get their first taste of real game action Saturday afternoon. Luckily, there won’t be a big crowd due to COVID-19, so it won’t be the usual atmosphere one would expect in a season opener.
