Special Teams

The FSU football special teams were not very impressive last season, which has been the case for the past few years if you’ve been paying attention.

Ricky Aguayo performed at a sub-par level, only making 7 of 14 field-goal attempts. Starting punter Logan Tyler was kicked off the team after one game and replaced by walk-on Tommy Martin.

Martin performed well early on but regressed as the season went on to average 39 yards per game.

The kick-off and punt return units were non-factors and never a threat to flip the field for the offense.

Special teams were the weakest unit, aside from the offensive line for the second year in a row. However, Mike Norvell places major emphasis on this phase of the game and seems pleased with the progress seen in fall camp. It’ll be a youth movement with little experience returning in the kicking games. Tommy Martin is trying to hold off true freshman Alex Mastromanno and Parker Grothaus is competing with redshirt freshman Ryan Fitzgerald for the starting field goal kicker position.

I expect this unit to improve with better coaching, but the inexperience at key positions does make me cautious until I can see the actual product.

Confidence Grade-6.5 (was 4 last season)
