FSU football: Nole players tweet ‘let us play’ against cancellation rumors
By Kelvin Hunt
The FSU football season could be over before it begins with recent rumors of the Power Five conferences planning to cancel the season.
The excitement of an FSU football season was palpable a few days ago when the ACC Conference unveiled the schedule of dates for all of its opponents.
The light at the end of the tunnel was there. Now, there are rumors that light could be off for another year amid concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic.
It all began with the MAC (Mid-American Conference) announcing they were canceling its fall football season Saturday.
Now, the Big 10 seems to be the first Power Five conference on the brink of following suit with the other four major conferences seemingly riding their coattails.
The move makes no sense whatsoever. What has changed in the past few days other than some non-major conference deciding not to play? Why go through all of the time of making schedules and having press conferences and allowing players to continue practicing if a move was going to be made so swiftly? It’s something FSU players are asking, and others simply want to play, so they took to social media to voice their opinions:
The leader of the movement is Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence as he detailed concrete reasons why the college football season should take place:
He drops nothing but the truth in that thread. He’s the star of a rival, but of all college players, he gains nothing from playing this season, and will likely be the No. 1 overall pick in the next NFL Draft.
Thoughts
I understand the concern about COVID-19, but the virus isn’t going anywhere, and there’s no guarantee players, coaches, and support staff won’t contract it.
Some have already had it and recovered, and I’m aware the virus can affect everyone differently. However, if colleges are going to allow students back on campus this fall, there’s no reason not to have a season. Not to mention, students on campus will not be subjected to stiffer guidelines and safety protocols like the football players.
It seems like a hasty decision to me, but I’m sure there’s more to it than just concerns about COVID-19.
